Stop Street Harassment is proud to support a campaign by Everyday Sexism; Women, Action & the Media; and our friend writer/activist Soraya Chemaly to get Facebook to stop allowing people to post content that depicts or supports violence against women and girls.

They write, “Facebook has long allowed content endorsing violence against women. They claim that these pages fall under the “humor” part of their guidelines, or are expressions of “free speech.” But Facebook has proven willing to crack down on other forms of hate speech, including anti-Semitic, Islamophobic and homophobic speech, without claiming such exemptions. That’s why we’re calling on Facebook to make the only responsible decision and ban gender-based hate speech.”

Read the open letter and take action by contacting companies whose ads appear on offensive content to let them know and to ask them to do something. It’s very easy to contact the companies using the mechanisms the campaign provides. On Twitter, use the hashtag, #FBrape.

I get that you are probably not the people to ask about this at all, but I feel like this is a safe space where I can ask questions without being shouted at. I was wondering what you guys- particularly Subi as a PoC- think about post/42452792975/1184 on this is white privilege. I normally agree with everything they post, but I'm pretty sure it's not just a PoC problem to have people think you're only carrying a guitar to look cool, and I (continued in another ask, sorry!)

(this is white privilege anon- cont) don’t think black people invented ALL music ever, as the submitter claims. I do agree with their second point about people assuming that heavy metal is only for white people though. Sorry again for asking you this, but you’re always so eloquent on inter-sectional topics.

Re: http://thisiswhiteprivilege.tumblr.com/post/42452792975/1184

Hey anon,

I know you were hoping to get Subi’s opinions on this specifically but as she’s not around at the moment I thought I’d just chip in my fellow (I assume?) white privileged thoughts.

With anything like this, if you’re white or not of the same race/ethnicity as the OP, I think you have to ask yourself what difference does it really make if the post is wrong?

‘Reverse racism’ is not a thing, white people do not face structural discrimination, and there really is no danger what-so-ever of white people having their achievements and contributions to history overlooked, even when those achievements and contributions are not actually their own (hello whitewashing!).

As a white person I have no idea whether that post is right or not, precisely because I’m protected by white privilege. We’re never going to have access to the cumulative experiences of racism, so the only way we can try to understand is to listen and trust people of colour when they tell us what it’s like.

A big part of trying to unpack your privilege is learning when to shut-up and listen, learning that your opinions and your input are not always welcome or helpful. And this is never more true than when marginalised people are discussing their personal experiences of oppression.

Comments like “but not all white people are like that” or “well that doesn’t sound right to me” only serve to derail the discussion and put the focus back onto the opinions and experiences of those with privilege, precisely where it doesn’t need to be.

Hope that helps.

- Becca

Slightly late, but today was International Day Against...

Slightly late, but today was International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia so here’s Subi talking about the importance of intersectional feminism for LGBTQIA people (filmed last International Coming Out Day)

yuriadventure:

One of the most ridiculous concepts that society promotes is that we should always consider “the other side”, that we should always compromise, that the truth is always “in the middle. The problem with this is that it ignores how many stances and opinions are completely not compatible with each other.

Feminism, anti-racism, and other similar issues are not a friendly debate. They are a struggle that’s life and death for millions (or, realistically, billions) of people. They are struggles whose only eventual outcome is the eradication of what they fight against (patriarchy, white supremacy, etc). There is no compromise, there is no “truth in the middle”, and there’s certainly no “agree to disagree” about it. Either patriarchy is abolished completely or it isn’t at all; either white supremacy becomes a ridiculous relic of the past as it should be or people of color continue to suffer or be murdered in its name.

These movements can’t “consider the other side” because the other side is actively trying to eradicate them and dehumanize their participants. To agree to be dehumanized under new conditions is not acceptable.MRAs and “equalists” often wonder why feminists won’t debate them, but it’s because they don’t understand that they’re the enemy, not a like-minded person with a different approach.

My humanity is not up for debate.

this, so much.

Yes yes yes.

Angelina Jolie should be commended for her brave and difficult decision, not only to opt for a preventative double mastectomy to reduce her high risk of breast cancer, but to also speak publicly about it in the hopes of encouraging others to do the same.

But for many from low income brackets or with reason to be wary of the medical establishment, accessing such life saving treatment is far from easy.

Black Girl In Suburbia (documentary trailer)

Black Girl In Suburbia is a feature documentary that looks into the experiences of Black girls growing up in predominately white communities. This is a different look into suburbia from the perspective of women of color. This film explores through professional and personal interviews the conflict and issues Black girls have relating to both white and Black communities.

Black Girl In Suburbia intends to spark an open dialogue about race, identity, and perspective among all people, in hopes that these discussions will allow us to reconsider perceptions of ourselves, others and the communities in which we live and share.

Release date 2014
http://www.blackgirlinsuburbia.com

Your support is appreciated!

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Black-…

Oh hey my life. I wonder how much I’ll see myself in there! Though I have immigrant parents from two different countries, so that adds a whole ‘nother layer of complexity.

bitemebeautiful:

Things fascism is: a political philosophy or system of government (and the exact definitional boundaries are contested) generally agreed to involve ultra-nationalism, militarism, a belief in a strong authoritative leader, ethnocentrism, the belief that the ‘stronger’ should physically displace the ‘weaker’ (often these groups are defined based on race/ethnicity/nationality), a hostility to socialism and communism, an authoritarian state, a commitment to imperialism and military force, etc.

If you are a member of a group of women that has been constantly caricatured as mammies and welfare queens, sexually pathologized, and whose inequity has been attributed to broken, abnormal, and matriarchal family structures, then bearing the title of Mrs. and taking your husband’s last name can actually be displays of resistance. If you have grown up seeing constant media reports on the fatherlessness of Black children and the unmarriageability of Black women, then having your father walk you down the aisle and flashing your ring can both be points of pride.”

- Jalondra A. People disagree with you. You're removing their videos for disagreeing with you and and pretending it's because they're using images you've uploaded yourselves. That's a cunt thing to do.

Dick thing, cunt thing, entitled little brat thing, whatever you want to call it using footage of someone that you’ve nicked from their YouTube channel without permission is a shitty thing to do.

Believe whatever you want about our reasons for having the videos removed, but there are other videos disagreeing with us that don’t use our footage and so haven’t been flagged. Literally all they had to do was edit our footage out of their videos and this could have all been resolved. Even if we didn’t like what was left YouTube would have no reason to remove videos that are nothing more than an original work of criticism.

Instead, people have reacted by essentially screaming “YOU CAN’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO” like a bunch of spoilt children, and re-uploading the videos anyway.

The youtube removal process is automatic and they only review the video when contested. I will be mirroring a few of the flagged videos so that I can prove to you that they do not violate terms of service when I contest your flags.

I am amazed at the number of ignorant people coming to explain to us how YouTube handles privacy violations, when we’ve literally just been through this process.

No, the YouTube removal process is not automatic. It might be for copyright, but it certainly isn’t for other types of flagged content.

In the case of a privacy violation, i.e. the reason we asked for these videos to be removed, a notice is sent to the uploader giving them 48 hours to remove the video themselves or edit out the sections of the video that feature our image.

However if the uploader takes no action during those 48 hours then the video passes on to YouTube for review who decide whether they think the video constitutes a privacy violation.

If they agree that it does, as they apparently did in this instance, then the video is removed.

Apparently though a lot of people think they know better than YouTube and have, as you plan to do, re-uploaded the removed videos. There’s not a lot we can do about that but we will be flagging any mirrored copies as well as flagging the channels uploading them for harassment.

Jon Stewart doesn't need permission, Rachel Madow doesn't need permission, the average Joe Citizen doesn't need permission. You're inventing this idea that permission is required. You're simply wrong.

Okay, I don’t know what Jon Stewart and Rachel Maddow have to do with this, but I’m pretty sure they do actually.

I might be wrong, especially as I don’t know how the specifics of the law in the US, but in the UK producers are required to get your consent before broadcasting your image.

As for the “average Joe Citizen”, I suggest you read YouTube’s Terms of Service and Privacy Guidelines. You can’t just rip whatever content you like from another YouTube user, edit that footage, and then re-upload it to your own channel without their consent.

And even putting YouTube’s own rules to one side, doing so is just an incredibly entitled dick thing to do.
