Awesome protests erupted in my school today. Our student council planned a “fun” game for valentines day. They handed out paper hearts to every girl at the beginning of the day. Only the girls. If a girl speaks to a guy through the duration of the day, she has to give him her heart. Guys get five raffle tickets for every heart they collect. Girls cannot collect hearts, they only have one to give away, and guys do not have to give away anything. A gay male asked for a heart to give away to participate and was told no.
Some girls have taken this as an invitation to say things such as, quoted from twitter, “keeping the whores from talking today haha.” And boasting about “keeping their heart and not being a whore.” This has turned into an excuse to shame each other for talking to guys. And for what? A valentines game?
Rather than writing their names on the hearts and giving them away, many girls have written notes of protest on the paper hearts and are wearing them proudly as they associate with whoever they please and refuse to give the heart away.
Proud of some of the people in my school today.

males are rewarded for collecting female “hearts” and are encouraged to collect as many as they possibly can, but females are only allowed to have one heart to give away, and when they give it away they’re not allowed to play anymore
the correlation of “hearts” to how virginity/sex is treated in society is kind of eerie and definitely sexist

Well this is awful and pretty neatly reflects the heteronormative sexist narratives that get pushed a lot around Valentine’s Day.
Hooray for people protesting though! My favourite is the one that just says “Nope.” - B

Prude shaming and virginity

The right to say NO and not be judged for it is every bit as important and valid as the right to say YES.

Up a bit late despite being filmed last night (as evidenced by the fancy magazine make-up) because I fell asleep mid way through editing. True story.

chivalry & feminism & white privilege

daniellemertina:

I don’t care for feminists attacking chivalry… in its whole. Of course, there are things to attack. Starting with how it always has to be man to woman in the traditional context which is heteronormative and erases a whole bunch of folks. Also, the idea that because a man (or person) takes part in these arbitrary things (like opening a door, walking closest to the street, etc etc) that the reciever of those things “owes” them something (commitment, sex?)

But to attack people who like and appreciate chivalry is not for me. Normally when I see sentiments like that I assume the woman is white. Most of the time they are.

So it’s like why don’t black women talk about eradicating chivalry as often?

And then I realized that it’s because it doesn’t exist. It’s easy to say you want to divest of something that is simply a fact: that because you are a white woman (providing you are also heterosexual, conventionally attractive, etc) you will always receive chivalry.

Shoot, I wouldn’t want it either if it was such a fact of life.

I think this POV is indicative of a failure to practice intersectional feminism. Because if intersectional feminism was truly being practiced these women would keep in mind that not all women are even the default to receive extra attention and care and protection from men. And that because of that, hey maybe these women would like to experience that.

Especially since in a patriarchal society one of the markers that you’re indeed read as a woman is that you receive chivalry/ protection/ attention from men. And although that fact is problematic in and of itself, it’s still a fact. And it’s white privilege to ignore that.

If a black woman wants to be treated like a princess, then let her. That’s quite frankly a form of resistance for black women. Don’t shame her and say she ain’t bout the struggle as if chivalry & gender equality are naturally opposed to one another.
